Would you support a 4-day working week?

165 years ago, on 21st April 1856 stonemasons in Melbourne Australia went on strike demanding a reduction of working hours from 10 hours a day to 8 hours. The workers were extremely well organised with banners stating, “8 hours labour, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours rest”, that they won with no loss of pay.

A similar strike of 44 days occurred in 1919, this time in Spain, making the country the first in Western Europe to adopt an 8-hour workday.

Fast forward to present times and the Spanish government has recently announced a pilot for 3 years to reduce the working week to 4 days offering support for companies with minimal risk to participate.

Companies such as Unilever and the head office at Morrison’s have also recently announced similar trials as they adapt their working practices since the necessity of flexible working caused by the pandemic.

Many other companies are assessing these types of flexible working options including working from home whilst planning for the future alongside attempting to attract skilled talent.

Lobbying groups have also pushing this agenda to give a better work/life balance and greater support for those caring for others.
