Where would you spend your time if you had a business that could run without you (i.e. on autopilot)?

Steve Jobs famously said “It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.”

Priceless advice for small business owners who feel like they need to have a say in everything including all decisions in the business should fall onto them.

Most have never imagined a time when they won’t be around to steer the ship – be it a week, a month, a year or indefinitely.

Whilst being a bottleneck in the business can make the owner feel important and in control, it does come at a significant cost. In particular to their work/life balance, with them working all the hours possible and taking the least amount of breaks/holidays.

The best advice for any business owner is to shift their thinking on the possibility of having a business that can run without them – after all having a business should give the owner more life, not less.

I have helped many clients explore their own ‘autopilot functionality’ in their business through systemisation alongside developing a winning team so things can start running exactly as the owner wants.

Many now have businesses that run and continue to grow without them being having to be there.
